The Art of Healing

A Revolution in Medicine

Medicine is a language of science in that it is semiological- its grammar is critically hypothetical. For one to lay claim to medical insight which might benefit one’s health, they should consider the task as grave as the decision to attend medical...

... school. This is not to say healthy insights are tucked above the ivory tower of academia, or that a trained medical professional’s opinion is safe from the seduction of popular discourse. Rather, the rhetoric of health and medicine takes place between the critical hypotheses shared between the various field’s professionals and their laymen. There in lies an exchange of trust, between the doctor and the patient, or anyone who offers a friendly recommendation to someone in need.

In medicine, the scientific method is mobilized and the accuracy of results relies on a rigorous honesty from all involved parties- the doctor’s academic rigor and the patient’s self-diagnosis. Beyond honesty and trust, the future of health (on a small scale, with diagnosis and prescription, and on a large scale with the advent of medicine) is reliant on a dialectical understanding- on the patient’s end, an open one, and on the doctor’s, highly refined. What reveals itself in this exchange is a libidinal psychology of the grammar of hypothesis. We see the importance of an openness and honesty, semantic in nature for the doctor, rhetorical for the patient, and then through a synthesis of all parts, a rhetorical grammar of the patient’s physiology by way of the doctor. A dilemma arises with seduction- the doctor’s allegiance (academically, fiscally, or through a meta-fiscal academic schematic, with the economy of pharmacology, which includes a political element.) The patient’s seduction can fall prey to an over-reading of the doctor’s seduction, or in some cases, a variety of personal or economic misleadings of their own.

The science of medicine takes place on a semiological plane, but prescription and diagnosis takes place through rhetoric, which can also take place negatively through seduction- not like a doctor seducing their patient, but a doctor being seduced by big pharma or a patient being seduced by addiction. Addiction, beyond seduction, is a biological affect of genetic disease. This disease obfuscates the practice and diagnosis of prescription. The addict can see medicine not as a means of healing but as an exploitation of it. The patient/addict line can also be economic via black market prescription. The doctor/pharma line includes patients who are mislead by personal diagnosis via media before they even step into the doctor’s office.

Rhetoric through seduction is persuasion without understanding. Healing without love is in the pocket of Big Pharma. If the patient has enough self-love to be forthright in their self-diagnosis, and a doctor has enough love for the practice of healing, in this unison, an accurate diagnosis and prescription can be found. Both language theory and medicine often fail to account for the human-element of love, perhaps due to an academic oversight. There in lies the art of healing, which could be considered to be a revolution in medicine.
